Basement is common in houses. And they are versatile. While some use it for storage, some use it as a family room. Then there are those who set aside their basement as a playroom or a personal workshop. However, if you’re a fan of basements and a follower of Vaastu Shastra, it’s not good news for you.

Vaastu doesn’t approve of basement spaces in a building. Basements are considered to contain negative energy that is not fit for dwelling. Good news is it can still be used for other purposes like storage and parking. So if you’re looking to design your new house according to the principles of Vaastu, heed to the following guidelines:

Do not live in the basement:

Basements are dark and ample sunlight cannot perch through. Besides, there’s seepage of water from surrounding earth. Rodents and insects make basement unfit for living as well. All these exert a negative impact on the people dwelling in basements.

Part-basements:

If possible, construct basement only below a portion of your house or office. Vaastu strictly discourages basements that span the complete building structure. A preferable location for the basement is North or north-east side of the building. That way the basement will receive at least some amount of sunlight. Building it in the South or west will ensure no sunlight will enter the basement, thereby making it darker and unfit for inhabitants.

Also, try to keep at least a quarter part of the basement above ground level. Not only will it receive sunlight that way, windows can also be put up for better ventilation. It’ll also keep off rodents and insects.

Shape of the basement:

Design the basement to be of s uniform shape, either rectangular or square. No other shape should be selected as it would deflect wealth away from the house.

Height of the basement:

Height of the basement should be at least 9 feet. The more amount of space available in the basement less is the negative energy.

Storage Guidelines:

Store heavy equipment to the South or West of the Basement. The south-west corner of a building is usually kept higher than rest of the structure so as to ward off hot noon sunlight. As a result, it is designed to withstand more load than rest of the house. Keeping heavy stuffs in this part of the basement will help in better load propagation.

Color Guidelines:

Paint your basement with bright colors. Dark colors should be avoided at all costs since they tend to absorb the light make the basement darker. White is the most appropriate color for a basement. It accentuates the light and makes the already sunlight-deprived basement space a little brighter. Basements should be constructed with the same care as the other rooms. Just because it gets less used does not make it any less useful. Vaastu Shastra can be handy if you wish to make the most out of your structures.
