Let’s go back in time. No, not to the Ramayan era—think a little ahead. Somewhere in 16th-century India, amidst the chaos of kings, emperors, and holy men… one man sat down and wrote words that would echo through generations.
The Story Behind Hanuman Chalisa
Our hero here? Goswami Tulsidas.
You’ve probably heard of him as the guy who retold the Ramayan in Awadhi (Ramcharitmanas). But there’s a lesser-known tale that’ll leave you with goosebumps.
So here’s the scoop. Tulsidas ji was once jailed by a Mughal ruler—some say it was Akbar himself. Why? Tulsidas wouldn’t perform a miracle for the emperor's entertainment. Total saint mode, right? “Bhakti is for Bhagwan, not a magic show.”
So he was thrown in jail.
But instead of sulking, guess what he did?
He sat down, closed his eyes, and started chanting. Not just chanting randomly—he wrote 40 verses straight from the heart, praising Lord Hanuman. That’s what we call the Hanuman Chalisa today.
And what happened next?
Monkeys. No, seriously—monkeys went wild. They stormed the palace grounds, messed everything up, and scared the royal guards. It was total chaos. The emperor freaked out and ordered Tulsidas to be released immediately.
Coincidence? I think not.

Story 1: The Devotional Download (a.k.a. Hanuman ji ne likhvaya!)
One belief is that Tulsidas didn’t write the Hanuman Chalisa on his own. It was divinely inspired, or as we like to say in desi style—upar se aaya tha.
It’s said that Hanuman ji himself appeared in Tulsidas ji’s meditation or dream and dictated the Chalisa to him. Like literally, word by word.
Some even say Tulsidas got a divine vision where he saw Hanuman ji's true form, and this overwhelming experience led him to instantly start writing verses praising his glory. Total goosebumps moment.
Story 2: Written During the Kumbh Mela Silence
Another sweet version says that Tulsidas took a maun vrat (vow of silence) during a Kumbh Mela. And during this period of silence, he composed the Hanuman Chalisa—not by speaking, but by writing.

According to this version, Tulsidas noticed how people were suffering due to Graha Dosh, fear, mental unrest, and negativity—and he composed the Chalisa as a spiritual shield, a protective mantra.
And hey, if you’ve ever had a tough Saturn phase, you already know—Hanuman bhakti is the go-to fix.
Story 4: The “Ram Bhakt to Hanuman Bhakt” Phase of Tulsidas
There’s also a belief that Hanuman Chalisa was written during a deeply emotional phase in Tulsidas ji’s life when he was overwhelmed by Hanuman ji’s role in uniting him with Lord Ram.
It’s said that Hanuman ji helped Tulsidas actually see Ram and Lakshman walking through the streets of Varanasi (disguised as kids), and this divine darshan changed something in him.
Out of sheer gratitude and devotion, he poured out his heart—line by line—in the form of the Hanuman Chalisa.
