Bhadrapad Purnima, as the name suggests, comes on the full moon night and is not just a sacred day in the Hindu calendar, but it’s a day when one can lift oneself spiritually and foster family bonding.
It’s the divine time not only meant for the adults, but kids or elders must also observe vrat on this day and follow its great rituals. The day is said to be the end of the Bhadrapada month, which typically comes during August and September, and it’s the best time to perform spiritual practices.
Let’s dive into what importance this day holds and the puja tips for kids and elders:
Importance Of Bhadrapad Purnima Vrat
a. A Festivity Dedicated To Lord Satyanarayan (A form of Lord Vishnu)
The devotees of Lord Vishnu celebrate this day with great honor and do Satyanarayan Puja at home, keeping the Vishnu Yantra at the altar space or by visiting the temples. The festivity is related to an old story from the ancient Hindu texts, when there was a poor Brahmin who lived in the city of Kashi. Despite his devotion to Lord Vishnu, he had to struggle hard daily to feed himself and his family.
One day, he went to the streets and met a wise sage, Rishi Narada, or the Lord Vishnu himself. The sage asked him to observe the Satyanarayan vrat on the full moon day in the Bhadrapad month.
The poor Brahmin did the same and offered simple offerings in the puja, such as bananas, sugar, wheat flour halwa, and water. He took a vow that he would live truthfully throughout his life. Day by day, his life kept on changing, and his poverty faded. He attained a life of prosperity, peace, and happiness by observing the Satyanarayan Vrat.
b. A Time That Reflects Truth and Devotion & Honesty
It’s a divine time that makes us recall the truthfulness, honesty, and devotion of a Brahmin towards Lord Vishnu. This festivity also teaches us to follow the path of righteousness and incline towards spirituality.
The word ‘Satya’ means truth and worshipping on this day is like you are making a commitment with God that you will always walk on the path of honesty and dharma.
c. End Of Lunar Month
The end of the Bhadrapad month marks the end of the Lunar month. The next day is the beginning of the Pitru Paksha, when people honor their ancestors by performing Puja and making offerings to them.
