Why Parshuram Jayanti is Special: Know Its Rituals & Traditions

You might be acquainted with a lot of stories related to our Hindu mythology. But if you are not aware of Lord Parshuram’s story, then we will here narrate for you this fascinating memoir.

Lord Parshuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, has great significance in our Hindu religion. Born on तृतीया तिथि under the Pradosh Kaal, Lord Parshuram is known widely by people to cleanse the world of evils and establish Dharma. In Lord Parshuram’s remembrance, people celebrate परशुराम जयंती every year and this year, it will fall on the 29th of April.

Now let’s get to know about Lord Parshuram more: who was he and what he did for people, along with the rituals or traditions following Bhagwan Parshuram Jayanti:

Lord Parshuram is the son of Sage Jamadagni and Renuka. The purpose of his sixth birth was to release the burden on Earth from the sinful, destructive, and irreligious kings, who misuse their resources and overlook their responsibilities as rulers.

Rama With An Axe

Parshurama means “Rama with an Axe.” Parshu means "axe,” and Lord Parshuram took an axe from Lord Shiva, whose devotee he was. It is also said that Bhagwan Parshuram formulated the western portion of the Indian coastline, which encompasses all the modern-day states like Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

The History Of Lord Parshuram

It’s in the Hari Vansh Purana where the story is described as once there was a king named Kartaveerya Arjun. The king ruled Mahishmati Nagri in Central India and engaged in disruptive behavior that made the lives of common people difficult. The Goddess of the Earth begged Lord Vishnu to save the living creatures from the harsh treatment of Kshatriyas.

It was at that time that Lord Vishnu was reborn as Lord Parshuram in the house of Renuka and Jamdagni, to aid the goddess. His family was tormented too by the King, so he took his axe and fought against it. His father also got killed by the rulers when he resisted the forfeiture of the cow. Parshurama took his axe again and killed all the demonic kings twenty-one times.

So, the Parshuram avatar, from that time, was remembered as the great warrior, who fought the monarch and the Kshatriyas to liberate the world from their cruelty. Since that event, peace and tranquility got restored, धर्म was established and people also felt safe under his shelter.
