Kuch to Log Kahenge, Logon ka kaam hai kehna
Apka Kaam hai sach janna!

Kuch to Log Kahenge (Myth) Hamara Kaam hai Sach Janna (Fact)
Mata gets happy only when we fast for her. The motive of Navratri was never about pleasing Mata through hunger, which we think it is. These are actually the best days for your body to detox and to sharpen your spiritual abilities.
You must not sleep during Navratri nights, otherwise the blessings will be reduced. Staying awake is a choice for those doing jagran, but proper rest is equally important. Mata blesses devotion, not sleeplessness.
If you break your fast even once, the whole Navratri puja becomes invalid. Missing a day doesn’t cancel your devotion. The essence of Navratri is purity of heart, not rigid perfection.
Only grand pujas with lots of samagri can bring blessings. Even a simple diya, flowers, and pure prayers are enough.Devotion matters more than scale or expense.
Garlic and onion must not be eaten or even touched during Navratri. Onion and garlic aren’t “forbidden” by fear — they’re just heavy, heat-producing foods. Navratri is about keeping the body light and calm, so sattvik food works better. Please Note: Touching them won’t upset Maa Durga.
It is inauspicious to cut hair or nails during Navratri. This comes from the idea of avoiding vanity and focusing on simplicity. Maa Durga doesn’t care about grooming. Trimming hair or nails doesn’t affect your devotion.
Wearing black clothes during Navratri is inauspicious. In orthodox point of view, black is linked with mourning & negativity. But there is no hard and fast rule about not wearing BLACK. In fact, if we think deeper, the colour of maa kaalratri is black. In that way, black colour emphasizes the victory of good over evil.
Masoor dal must not be eaten because it is associated with demons (asur). The “demon” link is a folk belief. Logically, masoor dal is heavy to digest and doesn’t align with the detox purpose of Navratri fasting. Hence, people avoid it.

Navratri Ka Khana?
Kya Khayein, Kya Na Khayein?

Starvation doesn't make Maa Durga Happy!
Intention surely DOES!

Think for a second — do you really believe Maa Durga is sitting with a giant register, keeping score of your meals?

“Apple – +1 point. Palak – negative points.”
Is that really what the Divine Mother does in these 9 sacred days?

Of course not. Maa Durga doesn’t care whether you eat sabudana khichdi or spinach curry. What matters to her is not your menu, but your mindset.

Navratri is not about punishing your body — it’s about purifying your soul. These 9 days are meant to help you grow spiritually and develop self consciousness. And having the food that your body accepts easily is one of the significant parts of it. Maa Durga is ready to bless those who:

  • Try to do good for others
  • Bring positive change within themselves
  • Help those in need
  • Seek a deeper connection with their own inner self

So yes, you should observe fasting — but remember this:

  • Maa Durga does not delight in your hunger; she delights in your devotion.
  • She doesn’t want to see you weakened; she wants to see you awakened.
  • What matters is not an empty stomach, but a heart full of faith.

The real purpose of fasting:

  • To give your body a break and detox naturally.
  • To clear your mind, so you can focus on prayer and meditation.
  • To redirect your energy inward, toward spiritual growth.
  • To practice self-control, which leads to inner strength.

Simple & Auspicious Mandir Decoration Tips for Navratri

  • Start by cleaning the mandir (It would be good if you do it with Gangajal)
  • Keep an idol or framed photo of Maa Durga in the centre or as the main focus.
  • Offer marigold (genda) garlands — Maa’s favourites.
  • Place a brass/clay diya with pure ghee — keep it burning as Akhand Jyot for 9 days.
  • Make a rangoli at the entrance of the mandir either using colors or flower petals.
  • Hang mango leaf or marigold torans at the top for an auspicious vibe.
  • Draw or stick Om/Swastik on both sides of the mandir using kumkum, haldi, or stickers.
  • Arrange the Kalash with coconut and mango leaves.

The Big “No’s” of Navratri (Logically Speaking)

Navratri is about discipline, devotion, and inner cleansing. So, anything that breaks this essence should naturally be avoided:

Food Choices

  • No junk or fried binge-eating – defeats the purpose of detox and discipline.
  • No alcohol, smoking, or intoxicants – they cloud the mind when the goal is clarity.
  • No overeating vrat food – fasting is meant to lighten, not overload.

Daily Habits

  • No late-night laziness (unless it’s jagran) – Navratri is about routine and discipline.
  • No wasting time on distractions – focus should be on self-growth and devotion.
  • No neglecting health – fasting doesn’t mean starving; it means mindful eating.

Mind & Attitude

  • No anger or negative speech – it cancels the purity you’re trying to build.
  • No gossip or criticism – words should uplift, not hurt.
  • No ego, arrogance, or showing-off rituals – Maa Durga values sincerity, not display.

Puja & Rituals

  • Don’t light an Akhand Jyot if you can’t maintain it – leaving it unattended is unsafe and disrespectful.
  • Don’t do puja mechanically – devotion matters more than following steps blindly.
  • Don’t disrespect women, elders, or the needy – Maa Durga resides in all forms of Shakti.
