What is Padma ?

Padma is name given to Lotus as it grows in muddy swamp area and is a majestic plant which produces a beautiful flower.

It therefore symbolizes the possibility of enlightment even amidst difficult circumstances, where the impulse to struggle for salvation is strong. Among the Tantrics it is the throne of the Mother Goddess; the symbol of the eternal font of mystic power, of beauty, joy and eternal powers. It is regarded as a sacred plant, its stem represents the fact that all life springs up from water; the leaf the fertile earth; the bud virginity or purity. In Tantra it symbolizes the lotus shaped chakras in the human body. It is an attribute of Mother Goddess, Saraswati, goddess of arts, music and literature and of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune.  The following simple geometrical figures are probably among the oldest non Vedic indigenous conceptions of what they observed as qualities of human body.
