When Amavasya falls in Margashirsha, the day becomes more spiritually powerful and mystical. It’s because the divine energy is lying in it at that time, and it is Lord Krishna.
It’s a quote from the Bhagavad Gita: “ Among the months, I am Margashirsha.” In this saying, Lord Krishna is mentioning something that means, “ I exist profoundly in this time phase and this month carries my essence.” It’s due to this that Margashirsha Amavasya is considered auspicious in the Bhagavad Gita.
Now let’s talk about Margahirsha here in this blog about why it is very powerful:
Why Is Margashirsha Considered Highly Auspicious in the Bhagavad Gita?
- This is the night of no moon, which symbolizes the inner stillness.
- It’s also a divine period to connect with our ancestors, Pitru.
- It’s a perfect time to let go, cleanse your inner self, and plant spiritual intentions.
- This is the best time for attaining clarity and for new beginnings. Lord Krishna calls it the forehead of the year named Margashirsha (path to the head), a right time to evaluate our thinking.
- The month is infused with Krishna consciousness, which is a divine time to feel inner peace, connect to your higher self, and cleanse negative karmas.
Rituals Performed on Margashirsha Amavasya
1. A Diya is lit & people sit in silence
People light a lamp for the ishta devta and sit in complete silence for at least 11 minutes. This ritual symbolizes the darkness itself going when the light is revealed.
2. Chanting the Verse From Bhagavad Gita
The verses from Bhagavad Gita are recited, such as “मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहम्.” It’s a verse that is spoken by Lord Krishna of Margashirsha.
3. Offerings To Ancestors
Water, sesame seeds, and flowers are offered to ancestors. Ancestral energy is strong on Amavasya, and it’s a beautiful night to ask for guidance and protection always.
4. Set A Spiritual Intention
Margashirsha Amavasya is the perfect time to take a vow or make a sacred intention towards devotion to the deity and commitment to the path of righteousness and spirituality. So, on that day, take the vow of
“I will honor the silence within me.”
“I will walk the path of my life with awareness and love.”
5. Lord Vishnu & Maa Lakshmi Puja
Since Margashirsha is known as the month of devotion to Lord Krishna or Lord Vishnu. So, many people worship them and also Maa Lakshmi by keeping the deity’s idol or Shri Vishnu Yantra at the sacred place or simply by visiting mandir on this day.
The puja invites prosperity and peace in the household, and after the puja, sweets, coconut, and fruits are offered to the deity.
6. Deep Daan
People also do deep daan on this specific day and light oil or ghee lamps in temples, near the sacred trees like peepal. This is a gesture done, offering the diyas to the ancestors for Pitru Daan. The ritual is performed so as to bring light and happiness into life.
7. Meditation & Jaap
It’s good to indulge in meditation this day because it leads to inner purification. People usually sit in quiet for meditation or chanting at sunrise or sunset, and chant the mantra:
"ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय" or
"ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः" to focus on Saturn’s energy.
8. Donation
Donation must be done on this day to the poor and also to the Pitru. Donate anything like clothes, shoes, or food to the poor or needy. For ancestors, people usually offer sesame seeds, blankets, rice, jaggery, and ghee.
Final Reflection
So, observe the Margashirsha Amavasya day as the most purifying, the day to pause, reflect, and pray to the almighty Lord Krishna. It’s a wonderful time when we all connect with our past, cleanse our present, and set spiritual direction for our future.
