Dhanteras - Why is it celebrated?
Owing to the shrap (bane) from Rishi (Sage) Durvasa, everything was falling apart in the universe. The Devas lost their power. They went to Bhagwan Vishnu and asked for a solution.
Lord Vishnu said — You need to churn the ocean to get the Amrit that is required to regain your power and become immortal. But the Devas were too weak to do that. And the Asuras, like Bali, were taking over the charge of everything.
Then Bhagwan Vishnu said — You need to trick the Asuras into helping you by promising them a reward — that they too will receive the Amrit at the end. The churning of the ocean began. Mount Mandara was used as the churning stick, and the snake Vasuki was used as the rope to churn the ocean.
The churning went on for almost one thousand years. And as the process continued, treasures began emerging one by one. Goddess Lakshmi was one of those treasures.
At the end appeared Lord Dhanvantri, holding a golden pot of elixir in one hand and the Ayurvedic Scriptures in the other. The connotation of the Ayurvedic Scriptures is this: for the Devas, whatever was in the golden pot was their Amrit — the elixir needed to become strong and immortal. But for us, the normal people, we won’t find any such Amrit in the Kaliyug.
And what is Amrit in the real sense? It is whatever you require for your well-being. So, Ayurveda is all about your well-being. The healthy you is the powerful you. With that Amrit, you become so powerful that you can attain all sorts of treasures in the world.
Buying Gold on Dhanteras? Here's Why It's More Than Just a Tradition.
Well, there is also a story behind it.
There was a king named King Hima. He had a son who was prophesied to die on the fourth day of his marriage from a snakebite. When his wife came to know about this, she was determined not to let it happen.
What she did was—on the fourth day of their marriage—she lit the entire home with diyas and lamps, creating jagmag (illumination) all around. She heaped the entrance with gold and silver, making it so dazzling that when Yama (the God of Death) came, he couldn’t enter the house.
First, he was so enchanted by the glittering gold and silver, and then the wife of King Hima’s son began singing divine hymns in praise of God. Yama, moved by the devotion and unable to proceed further, turned away. The day passed, the prophecy was proven false, and the wife saved her husband’s life. Yama was so fascinated by the wife’s devotion and efforts to protect her husband that he declared:
“Whoever lights a lamp at their doorstep on Dhanteras shall not be harmed by me. I will not enter the house of anyone who buys gold and silver on this sacred day.”
And from that day onwards, several traditions became associated with Dhanteras:
Lighting a Diya at the door – This is known as Yamadeepdaan.
Buying gold and silver – It is considered shubh (auspicious), as it is believed to protect from Yama himself.
