The divine Lord Ganesha is considered the giver of happiness, good fortune, and spiritual wisdom. He protects his devotees against all odds, evils, and negative consequences. Considered the Elephant God, the deity's blessings are believed to remove all the obstacles in one’s path to success.

Let’s know more about the Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations and traditions followed during this time, with their deeper significances:

1. Ganpati Sthapana

The Idol of Ganpati ji is brought home with devotion a few days before the Ganpati Chaturthi celebration. This ritual is called Ganpati Sthapana, which is accompanied by sacred mantras and family rituals to perform.

2. Pranapratishtha

Special mantras are chanted to invoke life into the Lord Ganesha Haldi idol. It’s done mostly by the priests. The ritual is done to feel the presence of Ganesha ji around.

3. Shhodashopachara

Another ritual that is sacred to perform on the occasion of Ganesha Chaturthi is offering prayers to Ganesha ji along with presenting his favorites, which are durva grass, modaks, and red flowers (hibiscus flowers). The prayers are offered in 16 different ways that fill the air with purity, devotion, and spiritual liveliness.

4. Uttar Puja

Uttar Puja means bidding a respectful farewell to Lord Ganesha Ji when the festival is drawn to a close. This ritual is called Uttar Puja. In this process, the devotees express gratitude for the blessings they received from the deity and bid goodbye to their beloved God with deep love and devotion.

5. Ganpati Visarjan

The final ritual, which is called Ganpati Visarjan, is an act of immersing the Ganpati idol in the water. The devotees carry the Ganpati idol to the nearest body of water, which is accompanied by loud mantra chants saying, "गणपती बाप्पा मोरया, पुढच्या वर्षी लवकर या!" This means, “Goodbye, Lord, please come back next year.

Deeper meaning & significance of this ritual: This is the most emotional ritual that the devotees perform. This teaches us the feeling of detachment, which means everything comes and goes, but devotion stays forever. It also teaches us that the true connection lies within, not by showing outside.

The Mythological Story Behind It

As per one popular legend, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the dirt of her body to guard her while she took a bath. Unaware of this, Lord Shiva, when he came back home, was resisted by Ganesha from entering the home. As Lord Shiva was angry, he severed Ganesha’s head, which led to Maa Parvati’s anguish.

But when Lord Shiva came to know the story, he promised Goddess Parvati that he would bring Ganesha’s life back. The devas were sent to find a head for Ganesha; however, they could only find the head of an elephant. Lord Shiva attached the elephant’s head to Ganesha’s body, bringing him back to life.
