Sita Navami is also known as Janaki Navami and Sita Jayanti. It is the birthday celebration of Godness Sita and is most popular festival in Hindus. It is a renowned by married women, they keep fast on this day for long life of their husband. Sita Navmi occurs on Navami Tithi of Shukla Paksha during Vaishakha month. It is said that Sita Mata was born in Pushya Nakshatra on Tuesday, whereas Lord Rama was born on Navami Tithi. Sita Mata got married to  Lord Rama during Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. Sita Jayanti occurs exactly after 1 month of Rama Navami according to Hindu calendar.


Who is Goddess Sita and why is she famous?

Goddess Sita is wife of Lord Rama, she is also called avatar of Mata Lakshmi. Sita is known for her self-sacrifice, dedication, purity and courage. She is daughter of Queen Sunayna and Janaka, the king of Mithila. King Janaka was preparing land one day, when he was ploughing the land to conduct a Yajna he found a baby girl in the Golden casket. The plowed land was called Sita Janmbhumi, hence King Janaka named the baby girl as Sita. It is also believed that Mata Sita is incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The meaning of Sita is ‘furrow’. She was famous for having a great character. She is worshipped by a million numbers of people. Mata Sita is also known as mortals or mother of gods and all living beings. The worshippers are blessed with growth, intelligence and prosperity. Godess Sita symbolizes purity and fertility.


How is Sita Navami celebrated?

A puja mandap is made with four pillars. Idols of King Janak, Mata Sunayana God Ram and Mata Sita are placed. Til , rice and barley is used to perform Sita Navami puja . Legends of life of Devi Sita are read and other stories inspired by her life are read on this day.

Fast are kept by many people along with devotion, faith and purity.This day is celebrated by women as Mata Sita blesses the worshippers with happy and prosporous life of their husbands.People do pooja of Lord Rama and Mata Sita together to get a married life like them.Those who perform this vrat get qualities like modesty, sacrifice, dedication and motherhood.


What is the procedure to keep vrat on Sita Navami?

In India, the occasion of Sita Navami is renowned with lots of excitement and devotion. Hanuman, Lakshman and Lord Rama are also worshipped with Goddess Sita. At places like Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, Bhadrachalam in Andhra Pradesh, Sita Samahit Sthal in Bihar and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, this festival is given lots of importance. In temples, Darshan, Arati and Maha-abhishek are performed. Yatra are done by taking idols of Maa Sita, Lord Rama Hanuman and Lakshmana. Ramayana is read by sitting in groups in nearby temple. Bhajan Kirtan and aatris are done on this occasion.
