Devi Kamakshi ThumbOrigin of Devi

It is believed that in the very beginning God was one but wanted to see himself in various forms. As a first step, he created Devi, the cosmic feminine force. He created Shiva from his left side, Brahma from his middle and Vishnu from his right side. As Devi is the mightiest of all, she is known as Parashakti or Paradevi – Para means beyond. She is considered as the mother goddess of the Universe.

Devi Kamakshi is also known as Lalita Tripurasundari of Kancheepuram. She holds a noose, lotus, sugarcane, goad and a bow in her four hands. She has red complexion, wears a red color sari and a crescent moon adorns her head. Once all other Gods became helpless before the demon king Mahishasura. All of them worshipped Goddess Devi in the form of Goddess Durga. In the battle that followed, Goddess Durga created Goddess Chandi and Goddess Kali to kill the demon king.

In praise of Devi

After Devi killed Mahishasura, all the Goddesses and Gods worshipped and sang in praise, the famous Devi Stuti stotra. The story is depicted in Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatyam, an auspicious treatise. For overall development and success, recitation of Lalita Sahasranama Stotra and Lalita Trishati stotra are mentioned many times in the scriptures. Goddess Devi is always engaged in the continuous dissolution process and the recreation of the universe as Lord Shiva’s ideal consort. She is always associated with Shiva as Shakti, with Bhairava as Bhairavi, with Mahakala she is Smashana Tara and so on. Sri Chakra is the Tantric diagrammatic representation of Devi. Worshipping Goddess Devi is the ultimate form of worship.
