Blue Sapphire in Jyotish

Blue Sapphire (Neelam) is worn to strengthen Shani when that planet supports your birth chart, and it is traditionally chosen for discipline, steady career growth and success in work. Because a gemstone strengthens its planet, it is chosen from the birth chart, ideally the lagna, and not from the rashi alone. Neelam is known as a fast-acting stone. Many astrologers advise a short trial, wearing or keeping the stone close for a few days, before it is set permanently. See the Shani remedies for other remedies of Shani.

How blue sapphire is traditionally worn

• Finger: the middle finger.
• Metal: silver or panchdhatu.
• Day: Saturday, in Shukla Paksha, in the morning after bathing.
• Mantra: Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah, chanted 108 times before wearing.

How to choose a blue sapphire

• Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Thailand and Africa are common sources. Check the certificate for heat treatment.
• Fix the weight with your astrologer. A common trade measure is 1 ratti = 0.91 carat.
• A clean stone of moderate weight is preferred over a large stone with heavy inclusions.
• Buy with a lab certificate. For a stone matched to your chart, consult Pt. Rahul Kaushl.
