We Celebrate Diwali Every Year… But Do We Really Know Why?

  • Every year on Diwali, we decorate our homes, light diyas, and perform puja — just as our parents and grandparents did. But have you ever stopped to wonder why we do it all this way?

  • The truth is, every Diwali ritual has a reason. Lighting diyas, for example, isn’t just symbolic — the sesame oil and cotton wick are believed to clear negative energy and attract good vibrations. The timing of the puja itself, during Amavasya, is meant to bring balance between darkness and light — both outside and within us.

  • Somewhere along the way, though, many of us started doing it out of habit, not understanding. So this year, instead of just following the motions, let’s dig deeper. Pandit Rahul Kaushal Ji will help us uncover how Diwali Puja is truly meant to be done — and more importantly, why. Because when you understand the why, every ritual starts to mean something again.

How to Prepare for Diwali Puja?

Before we begin the rituals, let’s start with the space where it all happens — the place of worship. After cleaning your home, sprinkle Ganga Jal (गंगाजल ) around the house, especially in the area where the puja will take place.

Place a small wooden platform or stool (chowki) for the deities. Cover it with a clean red or yellow cloth. The deities are never placed directly on the ground. In the center of the chowki, draw an Ashtadal — an eight-petaled lotus — using turmeric or vermilion (kumkum).

When setting up the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, make sure that while performing the puja, you are facing either the east or north direction — both considered auspicious. Lord Ganesha should always be placed to the left of Goddess Lakshmi.

In the northeast corner of your altar (the Ishan Kon), place a water-filled Kalash (sacred vessel). Add a coin, betel nut (supari), sacred grass (durva), a piece of turmeric, and a few mango leaves. Finally, place a coconut on top of the Kalash.

Next to the Kalash, make nine small mounds of rice. Each one symbolizes a planet in the Navagraha. Offer prayers to them for harmony, balance, and protection from planetary obstacles.

Say NO to “बाज़ार वाली मिठाई”

According to Pt. Rahul Kaushl, you should never bring sweets from the market. Mithai should always be made at home—with love and togetherness. Every family member should take part in the process.

If you’re making kheer, for instance, let one person add the rice and another add the sugar. When everyone contributes, the sweetness of the mithai multiplies with the warmth of family bonding.

Diwali 2025 — Simple Answers to Deep Questions

  • Why do we celebrate Diwali on Amavasya, the darkest night?

Long ago, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya on this night after defeating Ravana. People lit diyas to welcome him home. Diwali reminds us that even in darkness, light can win. It’s not just about lamps — it’s about bringing light into our hearts and removing negativity from our lives.

  • Why do we light diyas instead of candles?

Diyas are made of clay, filled with sesame oil, and have a cotton wick — all natural and sacred. They connect us to nature and spread positive energy. Candles are modern, but diyas carry emotion and tradition. A diya glows with meaning, not just light.

  • Why is sesame oil used in diyas?

Sesame oil has always been used in holy rituals because it’s said to remove bad energy. It also burns longer and cleaner than other oils. Just like that, when we keep our thoughts pure, our inner light shines longer too.

  • Why do we clean and decorate our homes before Diwali?

It’s believed that Goddess Lakshmi visits clean and bright homes. But cleaning is not just for her — it’s for us. A clean home feels peaceful, and a fresh start brings positive energy. When our space is clear, our mind feels lighter too.

  • Why do we worship Lakshmi and Ganesha together?

Lakshmi brings wealth and prosperity, and Ganesha removes obstacles. Together, they remind us that money needs wisdom, and success needs balance. Both blessings work best when they go hand in hand.

  • Why should we face east or north during puja?

Facing east welcomes the rising sun’s energy, and facing north brings the blessings of Kubera, the god of wealth. It’s also said to help us stay calm and focused during prayers.

  • What’s the meaning of the eight-petaled lotus (Ashtadal)?

The lotus is Goddess Lakshmi’s favorite flower. The eight petals represent her eight forms — wealth, strength, courage, wisdom, and more. It reminds us that true prosperity means more than just money — it includes peace and happiness too.

  • Why do we place a coconut on the Kalash?

The coconut stands for our head — strong outside, pure inside. Keeping it on the Kalash shows that we are offering our ego and pride to the divine. The water inside represents life, and the leaves stand for growth and freshness.

  • What do the nine rice mounds mean in Diwali puja?

They represent the nine planets (Navgraha). Offering prayers to them means we’re asking for balance in life — in time, emotions, and destiny. It’s our way of showing respect to the forces that guide the universe.

  • Do mantras really have any effect?

Yes — mantras are powerful sounds. When we chant them, our breath and mind become steady. The sound creates peace inside us. It’s not about religion — it’s about calmness and focus.

  • Why shouldn’t we buy sweets from the market?

Pandit Rahul Kaushl says sweets should be made at home with love. When each family member helps — stirring, tasting, decorating — the mithai carries emotion, not just sugar. Market sweets may be easy, but homemade ones carry blessings.

  • Can making mithai together really bring a family closer?

Yes! When everyone helps in the kitchen — even with small things — it becomes a happy moment. You laugh, talk, and share time. That’s what Diwali is really about — togetherness and joy, not just fancy food.

  • Why is Tantra Puja done at midnight?

Midnight is very peaceful — the world is quiet, and energy is strong. It’s said to be the best time to pray deeply and remove negative energy. It’s not scary — it’s about facing your fears and finding strength within.

  • Why do we chant “ॐ श्री महालक्ष्म्यै नमः”?

It’s a way to call the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi — for peace, wealth, and happiness. But more than that, it reminds us to be thankful for what we already have. Gratitude brings more abundance than greed ever can.

  • Are these old rituals still useful today?

Yes, very much. These customs bring families together and fill our homes with peace. You don’t have to do everything perfectly — even lighting one diya with love can change the energy around you. Traditions matter because they remind us who we are.
