Ruby (Manik) is worn to strengthen Surya when that planet supports your birth chart, and it is traditionally chosen for confidence, leadership, authority and recognition. Because a gemstone strengthens its planet, it is chosen from the birth chart, ideally the lagna, and not from the rashi alone.
