Kojagiri Puja: What to offer Goddess Lakshmi on Kojagiri Night?

Haven’t heard about Kojagiri Purnima puja? Then we must tell you that it is a special full moon night dedicated to worshiping Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Lakshmi blesses the devotees with wealth, prosperity, and abundance.

In addition, people celebrate Kojagiri Purnima with joy and devotion on the night of Kojagiri, believing that Maa Lakshmi descends to earth and blesses everyone with eternal grace and devotion.

One of the most important aspects of this puja is naivedya, offered to Maa Lakshmi. So, let’s have a look at what must be offered during this night to Goddess Lakshmi:

    1. Kheer

Devotees offer Kheer made with milk, sugar, and rice to Maa Lakshmi. They often prepare it and leave it under the moonlight during Sharad Purnima. People believe that the moonlight on this night carries healing properties and helps devotees heal.

    2. Milk & Sweets

People call Kojagiri the night of milk and ritually offer this milk to Maa Lakshmi on Kojagiri Puja night.
They serve the milk warm and flavor it with cardamom, saffron, almonds, and pistachios.

    3. Lotus Flowers

Lotus flowers are dear to Maa Lakshmi, as she is always seated on a lotus flower. So, these flowers are also offered on the Kojagiri puja night. But if not available, one can also offer the white or red flowers like Jasmine or roses.

    4. Fruits & Coconut

Devotees also offer seasonal fruits such as bananas, apples, and pomegranates. They consider coconut a sacred offering to the deity, symbolizing inner purity and true devotion.

    5. Coins & Currency

Some devotees also believe in offering coins and currencies to Maa Lakshmi during Kojagiri puja night. It’s offered by keeping the Shri Vaibhav Lakshmi Yantra at the home temple or by visiting the Maa Lakshmi temple nearby.

It is believed that offering coins or currencies helps in attracting wealth and prosperity in life.

    6. Paan Supari

At many places, like in Bengal and Odisha, people also present paan-supari to the deity on the Kojagiri puja occasion as a part of the traditional rituals.

People arrange the leaves with coins, sindoor, and turmeric in the thali and perform prayers for prosperity and well-being.

    7. White Rice Or Flattened Rice

White rice or the flattened rice called Poha is also served to Maa during the Kojagiri Puja. Some devotees also offer flattened rice mixed with milk and jaggery to the deity.

This sweet offering is considered highly auspicious and is placed in a silver or brass bowl before the image of Goddess Lakshmi.

Kojagiri As A Social & Family Festival

Kojagiri night is not an ordinary night, but it's the night of celebration of relationships. In some places, the newlyweds celebrate their first Kojagiri together under the moonlight.

If we talk about the Bengali households, they do Kojagiri puja with great devotion, making it a time of family reunion and festive joy.

In Maharashtra, people unite at terraces and courtyards, drink milk together, and sing traditional songs by staying up late.
