The mind in the Vedic tradition
The Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda says the Moon was born from the mind of the cosmic Purusha: chandrama manaso jatah. Jyotish follows this and reads the mind, emotions and inner peace through Chandra. A restless mind is often read through an afflicted Moon, and the remedies of Chandra, such as pearl, moonstone and the 2 mukhi rudraksha, are chosen to steady it. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras define yoga itself as the stilling of the movements of the mind, yogas chitta vritti nirodhah, and japa with a mala is one of the oldest ways to practise it.
Remedies for a calm mind

A simple daily practice
- Sit at the same time each day, facing east or north.
- Hold the mala in the right hand and chant Om Namah Shivaya, or the mantra given by your guru, once on each bead for one round of 108.
- Do not cross the guru bead; turn the mala and continue for a second round.
- Wear a calming bracelet through the day as a reminder of the practice.
