Day 01

1st Narata - Maa Shailputri

What is Ghatsthapna?

Honestly, it's all about the welcome.

Imagine your most beloved family member is coming to visit you for nine whole days. You wouldn't just wait for them to show up, right? You'd get their room ready, maybe put fresh flowers out, and make everything feel special and welcoming.

That's exactly what Ghatasthapana is. On the very first morning of Navratri, we are setting up a special, honored seat for the Goddess. We're telling her, "Maa Durga, my home is ready for you. Please come, reside here with us, and accept our love and prayers for these nine days."

The Ghata, or the Kalash (pot), becomes a symbolic body for her divine energy to reside in. It's the focal point of all our prayers. And the barley seeds we plant? As we nurture them and they sprout over the nine days, they are a living, breathing symbol of the growth, fertility, and abundance that the Goddess brings into our lives. It’s a beautiful, visual prayer.

Samagri for Ghatsthapna

  • A wide, shallow clay pot: This will be the little garden bed for our barley.
  • Clean soil: Enough to make a couple of layers in the pot.
  • Barley seeds (Jau): The seeds of prosperity!
  • A Kalash: A pot made of brass, copper, or even a clean earthen one works wonderfully. Use what you have!
  • Clean Water: If you have some holy Ganga water (Gangajal), add a few drops. If not, don't worry, clean tap water offered with love is just as pure.
  • A Coconut with Husk: The kind with the husk still on, the ones that look like they have a little tuft of hair on top.
  • A small piece of red cloth: To wrap our coconut in.
  • Moli (the red & yellow sacred thread): For tying everything with blessings.
  • A few leaves: Traditionally five mango or Ashoka leaves.
  • A few little things for inside the Kalash: A coin, a flower, a betel nut (supari), and some blades of Durva grass.
  • Things for anointing: Sandalwood paste (chandan), turmeric (haldi), and vermilion (kumkum).
  • For the prayer itself: An idol or photo of Maa Durga, a ghee lamp (diya), incense (dhoop), some flowers, fruits, and a sweet treat for the offering (prasad).

Let’s Do Ghatsthapna Step By Step?

Step1:

Let's Plant Our Little Garden

Take your wide clay pot. Spread a thin layer of soil inside. Now, take a handful of the barley seeds and sprinkle them all over the soil. Cover them gently with another layer of soil. Sprinkle just a little bit of water to make the soil damp, not muddy

Step 2:

Getting the Kalash Dressed and Ready

Now for the star of the show, Kalash. Tie the Moli thread around its neck. Fill it about three-quarters of the way with your clean water. Now, let's add the little treasures into the water: the flower, the coin, the betel nut, and the Durva grass.

Step 3:

Putting it all Together

Arrange the mango leaves around the mouth of the Kalash so the tips are pointing out. Now, take your coconut, wrap it in the red cloth, tie it with another piece of Moli, and lovingly place it on top of the leaves.

With both hands, carefully lift your beautiful Kalash and place it right in the middle of the soil pot you prepared. There! It's done. Place your picture or idol of Durga right behind this setup.

Step 4:

Bringing it to Life with Prayer

Light diya and dhoop. The first prayer is always for Lord Ganesha, to clear any obstacles. Then, with your hands folded, simply look at the Kalash and invite Maa Durga. You're just talking to her from your heart, asking her to come and be present. Make your offerings of flowers, fruit, and sweets.

GhatSthapna Mantra

ॐ हिरण्य-गर्भः सम-वर्त्तताग्रे भूतस्य जातः पतिरेक आसीत्।
स दाधार पृथिवीं द्यामुतेमां कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम॥

Why is Maa Shailputri Worshipped in Ghatsthapna?

  • Every journey has to start somewhere, and for us, it begins with Maa Shailputri. As the very first form of the Goddess, she gives us the purity and clarity we need to take that first step with confidence.

  • She isn’t just a deity we worship from afar — she is nature itself. The soil we walk on, the mountains that hold their ground, the life force that keeps everything moving — all of it is her presence. That’s why, on Ghatasthapana, when seeds are sown, it feels like we are bowing to her living energy.

Why is Maa Shailputri Worshipped in Ghatsthapna?
  • Being the daughter of the Himalayas, she carries the strength and steadiness of the mountains within her. Worshipping her is really about asking for that same courage — the ability to stay firm and unshaken, no matter what storms life throws at us.

  • And deep within us, she awakens the root chakra, our foundation of energy. Just like a tree cannot stand tall without strong roots, our spiritual journey cannot rise without being grounded. Maa Shailputri reminds us that true growth always begins from within — from the roots that keep us steady.
