कमलासन पर विराजती, शांति का स्वरूप तुम्हारा,
सभी सिद्धियों की दात्री, जीवन पथ की उजियारा।
चार भुजाओं में शोभित, गदा, चक्र और शंख लिए,
ज्ञान-प्रभा से चमक रही, अंधकार को हरने आए।
ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, शिव भी जिनसे, सिद्धि पाने को तरसे,
योग, ध्यान, भक्ति सभी में, माँ तुम ही हो आदर्श से।

Who is Maa Siddhidatri?

Maa Siddhidatri has been mentioned in the Devi Puran and the देवी भागवत पुराण as the ninth incarnation of Mother Durga, worshipped on the final day of Navratri.


“Siddhi” ( सिद्धि) means supernatural power or perfection, and “Datri” (दात्री) means the giver. Together, Maa Siddhidatri is the giver of all siddhis — the one who blesses her devotees with strength, wisdom, and even spiritual realization. With मां सिद्धिदात्री, the story is not about power or battle — it’s about completeness.

Creation of the Universe

In the very beginning of creation, the universe was filled only with a formless, infinite energy. From that divine energy, Adishakti (आदिशक्ति) (the Supreme Goddess) appeared in her complete glory. It is said that when she manifested, the gods requested her to create balance in the cosmos (ब्रह्मांड).


At their request, Maa Siddhidatri emerged, radiating divine light, carrying a chakra (सुदर्शन चक्र), conch (शंख), lotus (कमल का फूल), and mace (गदा) in her four hands. She became the one who could bestow powers on all beings — humans, gods, demons, and even celestial beings.

Lord Shiva is associated with one of the most well-known stories. It is thought that in order to acquire supernatural abilities when creation was only getting started, Lord Shiva worshipped Maa Siddhidatri. She bestowed eight siddhis (अष्टसिद्धि) on Shiva out of her limitless grace:


  • Anima (अणिमा) – ability to become very small
  • Mahima (महिमा)– ability to expand infinitely
  • Garima (गरिमा) – ability to become very heavy
  • Laghima (लघिमा) – ability to become weightless
  • Prapti (प्राप्ति) – ability to obtain anything desired
  • Prakamya (प्राकाम्य) – ability to fulfill all desires
  • Ishatva (ईशित्व) – ability to have lordship over creation
  • Vashitva (वशित्व) – ability to control all

After receiving these siddhis, Lord Shiva himself became complete. By Maa Siddhidatri’s blessing, he took the form of अर्धनारीश्वर — half Shiva and half Shakti. This form signifies that without Shakti (energy), Shiva (शिवा) is incomplete.

The Devi Purana further explains that not only Shiva, but also gods(देवते ), demons (दानव), sages (संत), and celestial beings worshipped Maa Siddhidatri to receive her blessings. She is considered so compassionate that she grants siddhis and boons (वरदान) to anyone who prays with devotion — without discrimination of good or evil.

Essence of the Story

Maa Siddhidatri represents the culmination of Navratri sadhana — when the devotee, after passing through the stages of devotion to the other eight forms of Durga, finally attains perfection, wisdom, and liberation. She is both the beginning and the end, the giver of energy to gods themselves, and the one who completes the cycle of worship during Navratri.
